Diary of an Edinburgher

No Mr Turner

For the first time AA (After Archie) I had a lie in and read my book Kindle. (We are all Completely Beside Ourselves). When I could actually see it, that is. Archie, lying on my chest, kept trying to cover my face with his big hairy muzzle. (Yes, he's allowed up on the bed sometimes).

In fact, I've spent long periods with the book over the past couple of days and it's much the best way to enjoy a story (rather than 10 minutes half asleep in bed every night). I sat outside with Archie while sundry folk passed and he ignored them. Then a young girl (about 6/7) stopped by the gate with her dad. I was beside Archie like a shot, feeding him treats. I gave the girl a treat to give him. This is great, I thought - just what I want - a quiet, sensible, calm small human to show Archie they're not all screeching dog murderers.

What did he do? He went and stood as far away as he could - by the door, and would not come near, even for a treat! I think he might need an psychoanalyst.

I went down to the afternoon movies. A film I have been anticipating for quite some time - Mr Turner. I love Timothy Spall. And Turner's no slouch either.

I wish I could say I loved it.

But I cannot.

Because I could not get in. It was booked out!!

So I wandered on down town, bought a wee gizmo light thingie to stick on to my Kindle so that I can read my book when I lie awake in the wee sma' hours, had a walk through the Gardens munching on my would-be movie Maltesers.

Came home to hear JR and Archie in the shower. Well, only Archie was technically getting wet. He loves the shower. I sneaked in, so as not disturb them, and all I could hear was a nice calm voice intoning, 'Good boy, Archie. Good boy.'

Then, in not such a calm voice, 'Bugger! Bugger!!'

I knew that the hand held shower thing had swooped round and soaked her... It does every time...

We weren't in this flat last year, so I'm not sure if we'll get any guisers. Small over excited humans with screechy voices, in weird masks and scary costumes might, I think, send Archie over the edge. Me too. He and I may hide in the kitchen.
