Doug's Dorset Apple Cake

Today I made this spiced Dorset Apple cake, based on a Mary Berry recipe, its the third time I've made one, and so far they have all been a great success!
The reason this was made today:
Tomorrow is my birthday. It is a big one, 70, and there will be an open house here all day for friends to drop in, have tea and cake, beer, rum, whatever, and maybe a game of pool, we will see how the day pans out, I guess!
