Amiens I--The Cathedral

Today we took the train to Amiens, just over an hour northwest of Paris.  It boasts the largest Gothic cathedral in France--so large that it could actually contain Paris's Notre Dame!

Construction started in 1220 and finished in 1269. The cathedral has been very minimally reconstructed over the centuries, and it miraculously escaped any serious damage early in World War II, as most of the city around it was virtually leveled.  This blip shows the façade in its late afternoon glow--a breathtaking sight.
