Aten
This afternoon at Mackintosh Queen's Cross we had the opening of a new exhibition "Below the Surface" that showcases the recent work produced by the 232 Textile Group. The exhibition runs from 5 to 27 November 2014. I may be biased, but it is a wonderful exhibition.
This beautiful art quilt is called "Aten" by Susan McInnes and is hand and machine embroidery and applique. Inspired by Egyptian art work, Akhenaten who worshopped the sun god.
By coincidence, today is the 150th birthday of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh, who was one of the most gifted and successful women artists in Scotland at the turn of the century. She worked in partnership with her husband, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, on many of his important projects. Her output was wide-ranging and included watercolours, graphics, metalwork and textiles. Arguably her greatest achievements were in gesso, a plaster-based medium, which she used to make decorative panels for furniture and interiors.
Sorry that I am not able to comment much at the moment.
