Continuing with the archaeological theme
Today was glorious. Calm enough to open my bird nets in the morning and I ringed a few Redwing. In the afternoon I dragged Tricia away from her garden and we went for our usual stroll on Baleshare beach.
There however things became very different. At varying points on the beach the currents expose banks of peat that are supposed to be formed before the sea encroached and probably are about 3ooo years old. I do always look to find a post or the like sticking out but have never found anything - until today.
The image is what I found. It might not look like much but it is in fact a basket buried in the peat - you can just see the oval outline and it is clearest to the right and behind the bone sticking up - containing some bones with white quartz crystals placed on top. I was good and didn't try and dig it out but was worried that it might be reburied by the incoming tide so we did take away a few of the more exposed pieces.
The point is that it must be about 3000 years old to be buried at this level and to see something as ephemeral as a wicker basket in good condition after this period is amazing. The local expert is out tomorrow with me so I hope it is still visible and then I'll know much more about it.
