Just a little bit of The Wall
Twenty Five Years ago I was a very heavily pregnant woman, unable to sleep, and transfixed to the news overnight from Berlin...watching The Wall tumble as young men and women danced on it.
Many years later I discovered that one of my oldest and dearest school friends from Liverpool, who had travelled and worked all over the world, had met and married one of those victorious dancing students whilst in Australia. Now settled in Berlin with two great children I visited them 3 years ago and am going back again in December this year. His family was one of the many that was cut asunder and separated for so long by what can only seem politically and emotionally unthinkable in its harsh simplicity.
I learnt so much from staying with them and just chatting into the early hours, and bought this little tiny bit of the graffitied wall to bring home.
So, on this Remembrance Sunday, here's a slightly different way to pay tribute to survival, tenacity and hopefully tolerance.
The wall was erected the year I was born..and came down just 2 months before my own child was born. The news seemed very poignant that night.
