Autumn Woodland Birding Walk
Brighter day today so had a favourite local walk which is usually good for birdlife.
Although the wood above was quiet of birdlife except Wren and Nuthatch. In Spring this wood is the home of Treecreeper, Spotted Flycatcher, Pied Flycatcher, Great Spotted Woodpecker and occasionally Green Woodpecker.
Further along the walk past this wood into farmland on the edge of the moors we first spotted 1 Buzzard and then a second. Checked these out carefully as there have been sightings of Rough Legged Buzzards further north from here but these weren't.
Then a large flock of Fieldfare rose up from the trees in the valley floor and circled around settling closeby, at least 160 birds. When they settled one bird stood out as not being a Fieldfare and it turned out to be a Ring Ouzel. Ring Ouzels do breed locally up on the moorland but this is late in the year to see them as they migrate to Africa for the winter. There was a scattering of other birds usually seen at this spot but seeing the Ring Ouzel made my day . I did manage a distant record shot but it wasnt good enough to Blip.
On the way home the sun came out again and lit up this oak woodland, a nice end to a cold but satifying birding walk.
