hairy woodpecker
picoides villosus

another unpromising day for blipping, grey and cold. and then she flew in.

yesterday i blipped a downy woodpecker. today i am blipping a hairy, a very similar but slightly larger woodpecker. this one's a lady, no red patch on the back of her head. she's longer in body, neck and bill. she's a bit louder and drums slower. but she has the same class as the downy, if not more so. she is always a treat to see.

this tree is a very popular spot for woodpeckers. both yesterday and today's birds were photographed within inches of each other. the draw of this section of the lilac trunk is the small crevices and holes in the bark. the crumbs on her beak are from tucking away small bites of suet for a later treat. how these birds tell whose treasure is whose i don't know.

woodpeckers have such grace and style. i love their mono attire. please stop by any time you are in the neighborhood, ms. hairy. you are always most welcome.
