When the fens were first drained - in 17th century - the power was wind - driving the engines that lifted the water from the land into higher drains. Wind gave way to steam, and then electricity.Then the process was automated and these small brick buildings alongside the rivers pump the drains when needed. But now it seems the electric power is provided by wind turbines!
