These well known lines come from the fourth verse of a seven verse poem "For the Fallen" by all accounts it was the first verse he wrote.

In recent years the inscription on the Kohima memorial in Northern India has also been used. "When You Go Home, Tell Them Of Us And Say, For Their Tomorrow, We Gave Our Today" which was used on the memorial wall at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.
