Veteran's Day

It is "Veteran’s Day" in the U.S. In 1938 it became an official holiday and was known as Armistice Day until 1954, when the name was changed to honor veterans of all wars. In 1968, the Uniform Holiday Bill was enacted to change 4 official holidays to the closest Monday to allow 3 day weekends for Federal workers. Veteran’s Day was one of those changed, and for a period of about 7 years, it was observed on a Monday instead of Nov. 11. It confused a lot of folks. Finally, it was changed back in order to preserve the historical significance of the date and also to help direct focus on the reason for the observance: to honor all American Veterans for their service and sacrifice.

Today was another beautiful, Indian Summer day, with temperatures in the 60’s. I was lured once again by the beautiful light in the park this afternoon so you will have to indulge me for a little while longer. It is irresistible and it will soon end. Have a look in LARGE. Superstorm Typhoon Nuri which slammed into Alaska is now pushing a polar vortex over the lower 48 states and is expected to reach us here in the MidAtlantic region by Thursday, bringing winter temperatures.
