Veterans
They come tattered, torn, weary and worn - and my day became not quite what I had planned in terms of photo opportunities - so many veterans wander our city streets as their numbers strongly correlate with homeless and even kind of crazy. I had hoped for a portrait. I could take my hubby but his service was mostly ski patrol and bike riding in Germany - not exactly what we think when we say veteran - so it runs the spectrum I guess.
But we know what we mean when we honor those who have served. I recently finished a story of three women soldiers who joined the Indiana National Guard, right before 9/11 and ended up in both Afghanistan and Iraq. It was an experience of highs and lows and of tough adjustments at the end. Soldier Girls by Helen Thorpe, very good story.
And so appreciate the nice comments on my gal in the light from yesterday, light is just the magic a photo needs to stand out!
