Mallard
Today, my parent and I went to the National Rail Museum at York, to see the last day of 'The Great Gathering" - all 6 of the remaining A4 class steam locos (of which Mallard was one, and probably the most famous), in one place at once.
I tried to get some photos of the 6 all around the turntable - but there were too many inconsiderate so-and-sos who were determined to stand in front of the turntable and chat - rather than moving round as staff were trying to encourage people to do! I ended up buying a post-card of the 6 together - but managed this shot of the front of Mallard.
I was amazed to hear that a number of the 6 A4s still travel at fast speeds (up to about 90mph if I remember rightly) on the UK mainlines, hauling specialised rail tours. I know what I'm saving for!
