Diary of an Edinburgher

Cake! Flapjacks! Baby!

We love having a ground floor flat, after 13 years in a first floor flat. And yesterday, we had reason to be even more delighted... JR got locked in the bathroom, and had to climb on to the toilet, out of the window, on to the wood shed, down on to the bench and escape. If it had been me, I would have got stuck on step two - half in and half out of the window! And even if I'd managed to get out - as Croftcrafts pointed out - the back door was probably locked (it was!). So I would have had to climb over several high back garden walls to find someone in and gain access to the street. It doesn't bear thinking about.

I was aimlessly watching Pointless (or was it pointlessly watching Aimless...) but Archie the guard dog alerted me to an increasingly annoying rattling and a little faraway voice, calling 'Heeeeelppp!'

It was coming from the bathroom...

The door handle, which isn't a lock, just jammed shut. I unscrewed the handle. No joy. I handed the screwdriver in the window to JR to unscrew on the inside. No joy. I offered to ring school and say she couldn't come in for parents' interviews, but - true professional that she is - she made her escape through the window and rushed off to meet parents.

Rang an emergency locksmith and they eventually came. It took him all of TWO MINUTES to attack the door frame and release the broken lock.

'That'll be £77 plus VAT - £92:40. Thanks.'

Is this a world record for a tradesman's visit?

We had a visit from our ex-neighbour and brand new wee baby. Archie was so well behaved - he didn't try to eat the cake on the coffee table (don't think he likes lemon drizzle). At the end, the wee baby, R, started to cry. And kept crying. Feeding time. Archie looked a bit discombobulated - here was the noise he hated, right in his house!! But he quietly took himself off to the kitchen so as not to let out an accidental grumpy little 'wuff'. Good boy!

Almost, but not quite, makes up for a Very Loud Barking Yelping Exit on the bus!
