Jardin Majorelle

As it was such a beautiful day we took a taxi over to the Jardin Majorelle and spent the morning in this beautiful garden.

Yves Saint Laurent gifted the Jardin Majorelle to Marrakech, the city that adopted him in 1964. Saint Laurent and his partner Pierre Bergé bought the electric-blue villa and its garden to preserve the vision of its original owner and keep it open to the public.

The garden was made in the 1920s by the French painter Jacques Majorelle, with marble pools, raised pathways, banana trees, groves of bamboo, coconut palms and bougainvilleas. The garden is composed and coloured like a painting and is now a psychedelic desert mirage of 300 plant species from five continents

We then headed back into the Medina to have lunch at Dar Moha, which must be one of the best riad restaurants in Marrakech.

Moha set up his restaurant in this splendid turn-of-the-century riad in Marrakech, once owned by famous couturier Pierre Balmain. We had lunch at a table in the walled garden, by the beautiful mosaic pool, which is surrounded by banana palms.

The first course consisted of 15 small portions of Moroccan appetizers, hot and cold, each served in it's own tiny, colour-coded tagine. These were followed by pigeon pastilla and a berber chicken tagine and couscous. The food is a modern twist on Moroccan cuisine and every dish was delicious. The setting is fabulous and the staff are really friendly. Dar Moha is a must-visit if you are in Marrakech.
