Heartwood

The spiky sharp edge round this old stump is where the outer layer, mostly bark, has rotted and fallen away. What is left is the heartwood - very hard and dense. I liked the shape of the edge.
Didn't mean to get my walking stick in. I also had very wet woolly gloves, which made the phone difficult to hold. That's my excuse -in fact these days none of my shots is in focus!
