A Community effort
Today was the day when eventually the basket was lifted almost a week after we found it. It was a team effort. Present were three archaeologists from the mainland in their fluorescent uniforms, the county archaeologist, a couple of archaeologising friends from the isles, the councillor for the isles, the director of the local Arts centre which I can never pronounce let alone spell, the director of Uist Film, the local Dutch artist, a crofter with his tractor and of course a dog or two. Only missing was Uncle Tom Cobley.
Between us the material around the basket was dug out - the Councillor and myself proved a dab hand at drainage trenches - and then wrapped in cling film and gaffer tape. You cna see it in the image looking like a tractor tyre in the sand. After a sheet of ply was put under the basket, the tractor provided the transport to get it off the beach. Butchery rather than archaeology to some extent but needs must with the tide and erosion taking place.
Six hours on a windswept and cold beach and I was glad to see the back of the basket! Highlight of the day was a Snow Bunting and a flock of twelve Whitefronted Geese flying by.
