Sanctuary

The last day of D's conference today and the sun is shining on Stratford.
This morning I walked along the river to Holy Trinity Church, the final resting place of William Shakespeare. He was baptised here in April 1564 and buried here in April 1616. There is no record of where he was married - possibly the ceremony was conducted quickly and quietly, as his wife Anne gave birth to their first child six months later.
Several members of the Shakespeare family are buried under the chancel, because he was a 'lay rector' here.
The church building dates from 1210 and this knocker from the 1200s. Anyone touching the ring could claim sanctuary inside for 37 days.
While in Stratford, I have taken many photos of doors, locks, knockers and old wood. I like the way this has been worn smooth by the touch of many hands.
