The Future's Bright

WOW today I watched ophthalmology history in the making.
Woke up beady eyed after an amazing Thai meal and a few too many ciders ( classy I know) in the stunning Beacon restaurant with little voile covered booths. At 8am we joined the Wellington Clinic to experience a day in the life of refractive surgery. Impressive and overwhelming brink of science watching patients go from high myopes to perfect vision in the flash of a laser.
The afternoon I snuck in to the worlds first corneal tattooing operation. Patient had a blown pupil due to trauma and was suffering horrendous glare. Surgeon cut a pocket in his cornea the same shape as the damage. He then injected dye into the pocket thereby creating a shading effect on the retina with no loss of vision. Incredible. Nobody in the room knew if it would work, a case of, 'we'll we can't make him any worse' so there was a celebratory relief when the procedure finished and one delighted patient. So simple yet so daring an op, in the hands of genius.

My team and I came back blown away with possibility and excitement of our own clinic which we hope to open in 2015 and is everything I've worked towards since starting this job. It's all coming clear
