Boone Hall Oaks at Dusk

A long day. This was the conclusion, as dusk: We were leaving the Boone Hall Plantation, outside of Charleston, just reaching the Avenue of Oaks to drive to the exit. These magnificent ancient oaks extend entire length of the avenue (at least a quarter of a mile). Spanish moss hangs from every branch; the golden light on some of it comes from a bright streetlight overhead.

On the right are several of the small brick buildings which housed the plantation's slaves in the 1800's.

In the morning we visited the Aiken-Rhett House Museum downtown. The mansion dates from ca. 1820, and was owned by a highly influential family and its descendants, until the city of Charleston took it over in 1975.
