all strung up

I was walking down the corridor at work (a music college) and saw this interesting musical instrument being played. Later on I found it unattended so I took a picture - I'm afraid I don't know what it is called but it is some kind of plucked string instrument, about the size of a small table. I thought the way the strings were aligned was unusual. I'll try and find out what it is!
