Protecting the valley
Last night the rain turned to snow, but by mid-morning the sun was shining and here we were in winter wonderland. We got splashed a bit on our walk as we went though the woods and the sun was rapidly melting the snow on the trees. All worth it when we arrived at Guardaval (not hard to translate to guard of the valley). There are the ruins of an old tower here (1172) and you can see why this was a perfect location for such a defense. It sits steeply above the valley where the river, road and railway run almost directly below. We had no-one to fight today - we had it all to ourselves!
It made for interesting navigation on the descent as there were no tracks or trails to follow and we took a bit of an uphill detour so as not to trespass across people's homes or the railway line.
