Baby Love!

Today was a day I won't forget in a hurry. When I looked at this image on the screen for the first time I felt quite emotional. A mother with her baby...... There is nothing more wonderful than a mother with her baby.

What made this image so poignant was the fact that last night in Bundaberg we had an incredible electrical storm with high winds and torrential rain. This morning CCN and I walked around the large lake to the area where the Cattle Egret were nesting. This is where we had seen dozens of nests all huddled together. We had watched in awe over the past few days, but today was very different. We were shocked to see so many eggs lying smashed on the ground. The high winds and rain had taken a terrible toll. We fell silent and walked through the area quietly and respectively, not wanting to invade in any way.

As we finished our walk I wanted to say one last goodbye to the Ibis, the ones that I had blipped the other day. We're on our way home tomorrow, so it was really important to go back one more time. And there they were, these majestic creatures all safe and sound and there was the baby with its mother, so caring and so protective of this special little bird. Together they had survived the force of the elements and everything that nature had thrown at them. Of course I feel emotional, this is what life is all about.

For the past few days I have blipped several images from the Bundaberg Botanical Gardens. It is one of the areas best kept secrets and I hope it always stays that way. It's a wonderful refuge for many creatures, great and small and we feel blessed to have been able to share their space.
