Vennel

In Scotland, the word "Vennel"originated in royal burghs created in the twelfth century, the word deriving from the Old French word venelle meaning "alley" or "lane". Unlike a "close", a vennel was a public way leading from a typical high street to the open ground outside the burgh.

The word is used slightly differently in north-east England.

This is the Northgate Vennel in Peebles.

Waiting patiently for Emirates wonderful courtesy chauffeur service to whisk me to Glasgow Airport.
