History of mankind in 5 colours
Visited Sainte-Chapelle today, a masterpiece of medieval Gothic from 13th century. Its architecture is amazing, with a lower chapel and on top a royal chapter with these enormous stained glass windows (in large). 15 groups of windows tell the story of mankind in 1'113 scenes.
Was also interesting to learn a bit more how stained glass (windows) are produced:
- the glass is produced and coloured in mass, but only 5 colours were possible by adding metallic oxides: blue (by adding cobalt), red and green (copper), purple (manganese) and yellow (antimony)
- then cut to the dimensions of the cartoons
- afterwards details as facial expressions, details of clothes and decorations are painted in monochrome technique using shades of grey
- the glass is fired a second time to fix the paintings
- and finally assembled.
