Medicinal Chocolate
Yes I ate the whole bag but in my defence it is good for my nerves.
Did you know it is national road safety week this week?
Well my eldest boy came home from school today telling me all about the road safety assembly they had had this morning. My middle boy missed out on the assembly, infact he missed out on school completely today, but he didn't miss out on learning about road safety, he just learned the hard way.
Both boys were cycling to school today, they were taking it sensibly, cycling responsibly on the pavement and not going to fast. I was just behind them, pushing the littlest in the buggy. I watched my precious middle boy wobbled slightly and then uncharacteristically struggled to right himself. The second wobble took his wheel to the edge of the pavement, the next thing I saw was the wheel clipping the kerb and then him slipping off his bike and falling into the street. A passing car, the driver of which could so nothing to swerve or stop, hit him throwing him back up and then down on top of his bike. He jumped up instantly and made for the pavement - good in a crisis it would appear! The cars all around stopped, his big brother ahead stopped (and fortunately had his first glimpse of the situation) and a chap appeared from somewhere offering first aid and taking details and statements from all those around.
Although my boy was lucid and moving I wasn't sure how affected he was from the bump to the head , I called 999. The ambulance arrived in under 10 minutes and the paramedics kindly and thoroughly checked him over for about 30 minutes or so before declaring him fit enough not to have to go to hospital but unfit enough to do anything other than lie on the sofa for the rest of the day. They inspected his helmet and advised us that it probably saved the day.
The police were next to arrive, taking statements from us all before heading off in search of the driver of the car.
Our lovely pal Shelly brought some medicinal cake round a wee while later and while the middle boy watched tv my lovely husband and I mulled over how lucky we had been.
It was a freak accident which was no where near as bad as it could have been but it makes you think just how important it is to:
- check bikes are working safety and kids are confident cycling
-ensure helmets are worn when cycling
- ensure you can be seen when cycling
- be aware of all road (and pavement) users when driving and consider potential dangers.
- keep a safe distance between other cars when driving
A little road safety awareness for you this national road safety awareness week.
