U-Bahn München: 46/100 Kolumbusplatz

Munich underground: 46/100 Kolumbusplatz

After a fun skiing weekend in Sölden (Austria), today's blip shows another entry for my strictly alphabetical Munich underground series. Kolumbusplatz underground station was opened in 1980, together with many other station of the U2 line like Josephsplatz, Hohenzollernplatz, or Karl-Preis-Platz. With those it shares many design elements like the walls and the tiled pillars.

The particularities of Kolumbusplatz underground station are the 3 tracks with one island platform and one side platform, though. This design was picked to avoid delays, because at this stop the U1 line braches off from the U2 line. Arriving from the city center and Fraunhoferstraße underground station in the west together, the U1 line braches off to the south (with the next stop at the colourful Candidplatz underground station), while the U2 line continues on its way west to Innsbrucker Ring and Josephsburg underground station to terminate at the trade fair grounds in Riem.
