Walls from the Past
The archaeological site of Yagul was built with a commanding view of the Tlacolula Valley of Oaxaca. This area has been inhabited since at least 3000 b.c., and the complex of Yagul was built in the years 500-750 A.D.
The entrance road to the site passes cliffs with caves (Guilá Naquitz) where people lived in those early years, and there is evidence that the beginning of the domestication of corn from the plant teosinte took place here.
The name Yagul originates from the Zapotec language ya (tree) and gul (old) or Old Tree.
The Zapotec people make up a large part of the population of this part of Oaxaca, and their language is widely spoken in the villages.
