Tales of the Riverbank (8)--The Clutha Bar
Clutha is the Scottish Gaelic name for the the River Clyde and this pub was one of the best known in Glasgow, particularly for its live music. Almost a year ago it was of course the scene of a terrible tragic accident when on a busy Friday evening a helicopter crashed into the bar with significant loss of life.
I learned today that in the late 1890s several ferry boats known as "Cluthas" provided a service on the Clyde . The arrival of the subway and trams provided too much competition however and the Cluthas lasted only a short time.
