Gight in the mist
Out with my walking group today, for a trek from Woodhead near Fyvie to Methlick via Gight, some eight miles. We were lucky with the day, as it stayed dry until we arrived back in Mintlaw. The ruined Gight Castle is the ancestral home of Lord Byron, and was for hundreds of years the residence of the Gordon's of Gight. It sits majestically above the river Ythan. The ruin is said to be haunted by a piper who disappeared while exploring an underground passageway. I haven't been there for over twenty years. The last time was accompanied by about 50 kids on a summer playscheme trip. It hasn't changed much in that time but did feel eerie today in the early winter mist.
