The Huguenot Tunnel

There is a part of me which wants this view to be unscarred by modern development and yet this photograph was taken as I emerged from this 3.9km masterpiece of engineering. This tunnel through the Du Toitskloof mountains was built in the early 80's and was constructed from both sides using drilling and blasting. Incredibly the two drilling heads eventually met with an error of only 3 mm!
It was wet on both sides of the tunnel today ... often one emergences to find a different climate. The Du Toit kloof mountains are breathtaking and my favourite in the whole world. They make me realise how small and insignificant I am and yet at the same time I feel so contained and centred when I am there.
