The Queens Gardens
While in Nelson today on a shopping trip, Blip Mate and I popped into the Queens Gardens in the middle of the city, in the hope of getting a blip.
The garden is a classic Victorian ornamental park and was opened in 1892 to celebrate the jubilee of Queen Victoria. A competition was held for its design in 1887 and a Mr Antequil Somerville won the competition and began design work right away. In the early 20th century, the Memorial Gates and the Boer War Memorial were added. There is a large range of plantings , many notable trees and the most recent addition is a Chinese Garden.
The Queens Gardens are registered as a historic place with the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.
As a child, an outing to Nelson was not complete with out a visit to the Gardens - usually to eat our picnic lunch.
