Building Sn3 and N Worlds

Saving and reusing a trestle in N scale

On my last N scale layout, I had built this trestle from a kit - many many small pieces of round wood, each stained and then cut and glued together. The kit was made by Campbell. It was installed in a deep valley and the train track then crossed the trestle. When we moved, I did not have time to cut the trestle out of the scenery so I cut out a chunk of scenery along with the trestle installed and moved that. Yesterday I carefully cut and removed the trestle from the scenery and set it in place on the layout. Surprisingly I did not break anything.

The trestle will live in a hole I will soon cut into the styrofoam. It is a deep valley again with a small stream at the bottom. The track will follow the black line that the trestle is sitting astride now. The dark line behind the trestle is the main line and since it will be close to the "ditch" I need to build the ditch and retaining walls now before I can finish that part of the mainline. The red line is more or less where the gully will be on the front of the trestle.

I had not thought I would build any of the branch line until the rest of the layout was laid, but I need to make the gully so away we go. This is actually one of the really fun parts of the hobby for me. Sort of like sculpture.
