Ramblings from Zambia....

at the police station.....

Some drama this morning. Decided to have a lie in as its Saturday but at 6am the watchman from one of our ECD centres in town came to tell me that a car had driven through the wall of the centre and I had to come quickly.

I arrived 10 minutes later to find an amazing hole in the wall, a smashed car and a few people looking on. There was also a live electricity wire on the ground as the guy had hit an electric pole which had caused a wire to snap, before he hit the wall. Police were swiftly on the scene and they took the guy to the police station and the car too!! I was told to come to the police station to discuss what had happened.

So with my boss, I went to the police station where we sat while they wrote out statements - turns out the driver had no licence and was drunk and the car was not his - he had 'borrowed' it!! As we went into the main gate of the police station this is the scene that we found. So many bicycle taxis like this one. The police had gone around town this past week and taken bicycles off people who were in the wrong place (they are not supposed to ride in the centre of town as it causes too much congestion).

After discussing with the police, the guy who was driving the car has been fined for reckless driving, drunken driving and driving without a license. He cannot get the car back until the wall is fixed though. Two of his friends came and have offered to pay for the wall so that they can get the car back. Building started today and will probably finish tomorrow.

So it was a quiet and uneventful Saturday morning!!

(its not a great photo as I took it with my phone!)
