Fred & Andy

Day 2 trekking

We left after breakfast at about 8.30am today and trekked for about 5 hours to reach our destination at Forest Camp. This photo is Andy with his violin and our guide, Dharma. Again, the trek today wasn't too difficult and was both up and down hill. Forest Camp is at 2550m. We walked through some beautiful countryside and saw some great views of the mountains on our way.

Forest camp is a very small place with only three guest houses. Ours is basic but nice. No facilities except a toilet and if you want a hot shower its a bucket and you have to pay for it. The place had a sombre air about it today as we learned that a trekker who had stayed there the night before had continued this morning and died a few hours later. It wasn't clear what the cause of death was but altitude sickness was being bandied about which made us a little nervous. Although we're still a bit low to feel the real effects apparently it can affect some people quite badly even under 3000m. The local men all decide to go up the higher point and help. The clouds have come over so no helicopter can reach the body tonight.

We have dinner and chat with some German people who have been up to High Camp where we'll be heading tomorrow. They warn us it is freezing! They were going to stay two nights but it was so cold they decided against it. We are apparently staying two nights so, again, get slightly worried.

There is a dog belonging to the guest house which barks continuously ... we're not sure we're going to get much sleep here tonight!
