Ghosts of gold

Followed the ghosts of gold tour in Charters Towers and saw this photo opp in the Pioneer Cemetery. Charters Towers, also known as "The World" in days of yore, was once the centre of a huge gold rush. The hardy folk who flocked to the town in search of riches were buried in this cemetery. If you wander through nowadays it's in disrepair, but you get the sense of how hard things were by the large number of small gravesites showing the high child mortality rates. Thankfully we have moved moves on since those days and the town itself is now a sleepy stop on the tourist routes in North Qld.
