The World of Katcal

By Katcal

Early start for a walk up the mountain with Jess finishing in town. Then back to town for pastries for Monja's birthday and then a run/walk for 2hrs with Jenny (great way to get to know her). Then lunch in Vudu again (poached eggs with Haloumi, beetroot on sourdough toast) before going up the gondola with Monja (to use my free ticket) was funny listening to her get scared about doing the Canyon Swing (strangely I wasn't bothered!) then it was time to face up to what I'd stupidly agreed to! After a quick weigh in and some pretty mountains and stars drawn on my hand, we set off in a van, (strangely still not nervous) and was made to watch videos of example ways we could do the jump! A quick decision to go first was made by me, but Paul got there first, so second it was, we still hadn't decided so we went with 'gimp boy' 5 underpants on the rating, the worst! Basically scare tactics then followed.....pretending to push us off the edge, telling us it was worse to go as a tandem as there was more that could go wrong etc etc then after a fun pic, we had to sit on the edge so they could dangle us over the canyon an get ourselves upside down! Easier said than done....just put your legs up above your head in between the cable...haha! Then arch your back and look down! Once accomplished (with help) we hung there facing a massive drop just waiting for someone to decide to let us go.....then suddenly the ground was rushing towards us and we were swinging across the canyon right side up over rafters and kyakers, it seems like forever as you are swinging before you start been brought back up the canyon. A bit more winding us up as we got back on the platform. Amazing experience and great fun! After watching the others and getting videos and pics we set off for the pub to celebrate Monja's birthday and for a pizza (lamb and mint yoghurt, great combo!) where the guys who did the Routeburn joined us and then a bit of dancing and then back to the tent!
