Barley Cove . . .
The massive Lisbon earthquake of 1755, reported to be a magnitude 8.5 to 9, unleashed a tsunami that made its way into Barley Cove and formed the dunes atop which I took this blip. A second major Lisbon earthquake of 1761 set forth another tsunami up the southwest coast of Ireland transforming again some of the beach front real estate.
Imagine looking west as in this image and suddenly realizing a wave of 30 to 60 feet was upon you.
Today, this beach is part of our Sunday ritual of walking the dog and then having a fresh crab sandwich and a pint of Murphys at O'Sullivan's pub at Crookhaven.
Happy Mother's Day!
