Waterside

Even on a grey December afternoon, Hythe Marina Village, near Southampton still fits the bill when it comes to location, location, location.

It was the first marina village to be built in the UK, and I can recall being invited to the opening ceremony back in 1985.

It is still a unique development of 228 houses built round a series of canals and islands with a 206 berth marina and is cheek by jowl to the New Forest. It was said to have taken its cue from the Port Grimaud development on the Cote d’Azur in the South of France, and on a fine day with the sun shining it undoubtedly has a Mediterranean feel.

The marina entrance is controlled by lock gates, which are operated 24 hours a day throughout the year, giving direct access to Southampton Water and the nearby sailing waters of the Solent.

But while it’s a dream location for sailing enthusiasts whether with yachts or motor cruisers, it is also a jewel for those who simply want to live by the water.

There’s always something going on in Southampton Water . . . and its Italian restaurant is a delight.
