Roots
A majestic and ancient oak tree on my school campus ( 7-12 grade) is scheduled to be cut down in 2 weeks...she apparently is too diseased to be saved, although many of my classmates believe the Board of Trustees just doesn't want to risk a lawsuit. Whatever. I had to go say goodbye today. She is hundreds of years old, possibly a thousand...I took pictures of the full tree but there's caution tape and decking and stuff all around...I liked this one because, especially as the setting sun hit, it reminded me of a large and grounded foot...I took this picture having stepped over the caution tape and rope fence so that I could touch her...hug her...kiss her good bye...when I pressed my body up against her I felt with such intensity and brightness thousands of stories she'd witnessed..it caught me off guard, took my breath away and brought tears to my eyes...kids were playing soccer in a field nearby...parents were meeting in a near classroom...a classmate had joined me and we had such a nice visit...the weather was gorgeous...I've had lunch under her branches and sometimes teachers held classes there as well...she is so huge many students could read or study in her shade at the same time while feeling you were the only one there...my experiences during those years helped to build my character and gave me perseverance and strength to accomplish anything I set my mind to...today I felt those roots in my heart and I am humbly grateful for her wisdom and grace...I will miss her...and I will carry her in my heart...
