Victoria Tunnel

This is 2 plus mile tunnel that ends at the Tyne at Ouseburn in Newcastle. It ran from a pit inland and brought the coal down to the ships on the Tyne.

The tours are excellent in terms of the human stories provided by the volunteer guides and it's history. It w as built in the 1830s and ran until the coal ran out in the latter part of the 19th century. In the last war it was used as an air raid shelter.

It's a hidden gem.
