Where are they going?
Where we live in mid Sweden there aren't normally that many planes flying overhead, but in December something strange happens. For a couple of hours every Saturday morning there is a plane flying north every 10 minutes. Sometimes, as here, they seem to be flying in convoy.
Where are they all going?
They are heading for Rovaniemi, on the artic circle in the far north of Finland, home of the Santa Claus village.
In one way it's fantastic that this small town, way up in the middle of nowhere, has carved itself this economic niche in the modern world. And I can imagine how much fun it is to fly up to the cold snowy world and meet Santa Claus, at the same time taking the chance to go dog sledging, maybe see the northern lights if you are really lucky, or ride a sleigh pulled by real reindeer.
But I do wonder if this is really a good use of the Earth's resources, flying so far north to meet an fantasy figure and run around in the snow for a short while. On the other hand I fly just as far southwards to go skiing in the Alps. Life's choices aren't simple, are they?
If you want to take a look at the village there is a live webcam. Take a look in the day or evening, there's not a lot of action just now, shortly before midnight!
