Found this lovely drawing of holly in one of my old Victorian books. Along with ivy it is one of the oldest Christmas decorations and holly was seen as the male plant, ivy the female. It has been said that whichever one came into the house first over Christmas tells you whether the man or woman of the house would rule that year! So beware.
