Job's Ferry
I went to visit my parents tonight and on the way home decided to visit one of my favorite places. This is Eastham Ferry and the photo is of Job's Ferry.
I used to play here when I was growing up and at the bottom of the steps the area you can see used to be covered with hundreds of pieces of broken glass in many colours. My friend Julie and I used to pretend that it was pirates treasure and we used to collect it. The sandstone steps are well worn and many people have carved their names there, including me.
A ferry service carrying goods and people across the river to Liverpool, is believed to have been sited here since the Middle Ages.
The early ferries were rowing boats run by monks, from the Abbey of St Werburg, Chester.
The lower set of steps is cut into the sandstone cliffs and indicate a very ancient ferry site.
The large sandstone blocks of the landing stage were added in the early 1800's.
The incoming tide covers the rocks very quickly and the mud around the jetty can be deep.
The steps are uneven and can be slippy in wet weather.
