Hydro #5

Last View. Here I have stepped back about thirty metres

There was a lot of fog around today and in between commitments I attempted to get some foggy shots of the Hydro Majestic Casino building but by the time I got there, much of the fog had sunk back into the valley below. Nonetheless this was an opportunity for another practice session with the Galaxy S4 camera. I want to use that device for all my blips for a while, in an effort to develop some skills in its use. For what it is worth, here are my initial impressions of shooting images with a smart phone - something I have never seriously done before.

The fundamental camera specifications are impressive. For what it is, the lens provides adequate sharpness, certainly sensor resolution is excellent, metering is quite accurate, noise is somewhat less (so far) than I had expected it to be and the overall results have pleasantly surprised me. Having said that, it is also true that the lack of command over things like shutter speed, aperture and dof is frustrating beyond belief. General handling is tedious. And in use I find that because the screen so readily washes out in daylight conditions, framing and focus are little more than a guess, much of the time. Above all else shutter lag is glacial in nature. I have had no success at all so far at shooting anything that threatens to move.

I just MAY have better impressions with more experience (especially in the matter of handling) ..... but I am not holding my breath. To all of those blippers regularly producing quality images with camera phones (as indeed you do) - you have my respect.
