Casanova costume
In Sinebrychoff Art Museum is just now a special exhibition of the culture of the Republic of Venice, La Serenissima. This is a traditional Venetian Casanova costume worn during the Venetian carnival.
The white mask is La Bauta. It was typical in Venice during XVIII century also in normal life as a common accessory. The bauta was worn by both men and women. It was obligatory for theatre-going women, but was forbidden to young girls. The mask´s form allowed the wearer to eat and drink without having to remove the mask and reveal their identity. Oh those good old days!
