Asymmetry

Yesterday evening I received an email from the college library I’ve recently joined telling me that if I didn’t renew or return two books today I was liable for a fine. I tried to renew online, as instructed, but the website was unfathomable. So at lunchtime, despite a packed day at work, I headed over to the library. And discovered that I couldn’t have renewed online because they’d forgotten to give me a password; that I could have renewed by email or by phone even though their email didn’t tell me that; that even the librarian couldn’t log me onto their renewals system; and that they don’t fine for overdue books.

I was moderately annoyed.
