No not Durham!
I had to go into town this afternoon which gave me the chance to look for an interesting blip. While I heading to one possible sight I saw this which I had forgotten about. This door furniture at Brougham Hall just south of Penrith. The Hall is the subject of one of the countries largest restorations of its type.
Four examples of this 12th C design exist: two in Durham and two from Brougham. Of the four this is the most perfect. The original graced the north door of Durham Catherdral fromm 1172 to 1977 when it was removed to the safety of the Cathedral treasury and replaced by a replica, cast by the British Museum. Both the Durham rings were bronze. The original at Brougham survived the war but was later stolen. This is a carefully made replica.
