The Old Railway
The railway came to Midhurst in the 1860’s and the line to Chichester was added in the 1880’s. The railway closed in the 1906's, just lasting 100 years, and the tracks are all footpaths now, through heath, mixed pine and birch, and pretty hamlets. Many of the old bridges are still standing; this is a typical one, just south of Midhurst, with impressive metal supports. We walked today for a couple of miles along the old track, lots of mud but quiet and peaceful. I would have liked to have found that the bricks were all made locally, but in fact the brickworks weren’t established until 1913, long after this was built, when Midhurst became known for its ‘white bricks’.
After I'd posted this, I saw from the thumbnail that it was this day a year ago when we did the same walk on a dank day, gathering holly.
