the collapsed road

After a good night out at friends last night the walk home at past 1 am this morning was well past our normal bedtime and so a gentle Sunday morning lie in was needed !!

The weather this afternoon was pretty uninspiring so we just went for a drive in the Peak district with obligatory coffee shop stops.

This shot is near Castleton, and is the south slope of Mam Tor. As you can see it is prone to landslip. The road was built at the beginning of the 1800s and was subsequently relaid until it was closed it in 1979. Layers of tarmac and gravel are up to 2 metres thick in places, demonstrating the numerous efforts to keep the road open. The diversion now follows the lovely limestone gorge of Winnats Pass.
